Back to School: Measuring Time in Milestones

The mornings feel a little different this time of year. There’s a sharper edge to the air, the stores are lined with rows of backpacks, and the calendar seems to flip faster than usual. Back-to-school season has a way of reminding us that time doesn’t just pass- it moves in leaps.
One moment you’re helping tiny hands into brand-new sneakers, making sure their name is written in the tag. You’re tucking a note into their lunchbox and wondering if they’ll remember to eat the strawberries you packed. Then, somehow, you’re watching them walk through the gates of middle school, driving them to high school orientation, or waving as they head off to college with a car full of boxes.
The start of a new school year can feel like a universal marker of time - whether your child is starting Kindergarten, entering their final year of high school, or taking that big step into adulthood. Each stage brings its own mix of excitement, pride, and a tug at the heart.
Why Back-to-School Hits the Heart So Hard
Back-to-school is more than a change in schedules. It’s a visible reminder that our children are growing - and we’re growing alongside them. These milestone moments magnify what we already know: childhood is a collection of seasons, each beautiful and fleeting in its own way.
It’s in the way their handwriting changes. The way their questions become bigger, more complex. The way they need you less for some things… but more than ever for others.
Letting Go, Holding On
With each passing year, our role shifts. In the early years, we are their everything-comforter, protector, guide. As they grow, we become more of a sounding board, a steady presence they can return to. Letting go a little more each year isn’t easy, but it’s how we give them the space to step into who they are becoming.
And here’s the thing - the letting go doesn’t mean the connection fades. In fact, it can grow stronger as we learn new ways to show up for them.
An Invitation to Be Present
Back-to-school can be an invitation to slow down, even in the busyness. To notice the little things-the way their hair sticks up in the morning, the way their laughter sounds when they tell you a story from the day, the way they lean into you when they’re tired.
The truth is, we can’t hold on to every moment. But we can be in them fully. We can take the photo, yes- but also take the time to be in the frame ourselves, in the memory, in the moment.
The Seasons Will Keep Changing
The backpacks will keep getting bigger. The first-day photos will evolve from gap-toothed grins to practiced teenage smirks to confident, young adult smiles. But in each frame, there you are- loving them through every season.
So as another school year begins, take a deep breath. This, too, is a chapter worth savoring. The pages turn quickly, but the story you’re living together is full of love, growth, and moments you’ll carry long after the school bells fade.
